The problem is, the Metaverse from facebook, google, apple, so on, will be as “free” as google maps, while it actually makes these companies billions of dollars from data harvesting. And hence, they can create metaverses that are feature rich .
Whatever open source version is created, will have to compete against their “free” version. And the short answer is, it cant compete.
