In Australia, a large number of payphones were turned into wifi hotspots, and most calls are free now.
This is because Telstra (Australia’s largest telecommunications company) offer a way to use the hotspots with your home internet’s data allowance, meaning if you’re near a payphone and use the hotspot, the amount you use gets added to your home internet usage.
Also, free calls are great if someone is in desperate need of a phone and don’t have a mobile (eg it was stolen, flat, left as you were fleeing from somewhere) because they can just use it to call someone.
I guess prank calls would increase, but they would have happened anyway if someone had a dollar.
